In Memoriam: David Brinkley

David Brinkley died last night. He was 82.

Not long ago there was a brief story reporting that Dave was rescued by firemen when his house caught fire. He was bedridden and, according to the story, was in the hands of a caregiver. The story gave no other details, but the inference was ominous.

I tried to learn what his state of health was, but was unable to get any more information. Obviously the news was grim.

Back in my Washington days David was a friend, not all that close, but still a friend. I saw and talked with him frequently. Once, when visiting the NBC Washington studio on business I brought along two of my sons. David went out of his way to have one of his sons take my boys in hand and give them a tour of the studio so that Id be free to transact the business Id come to do.

He was always gracious although politically we were miles apart. In later years, I was forced by my then-editors to intrude on his privacy in an outrageously rude manner on the night NBC fired David. That ruptured our friendship, but he still took time to talk to me when I called him to ask questions.

He was a fixture at ABC, hosting the ABC Sunday show, which has never been the same since he retired six years ago. During his long reign there he developed a format that broke a lot of molds.

He was a great gentlemen, unlike many of the other anchormen of his day and now. Dan Rather and Peter Jennings couldnt hold a candle to him, either as journalists or as human beings.

I know he hated his signature sign-off during his stint with Chet Huntley, "Good Night, Chet," and Chets "Good Night, David."

But Ill say it anyway: Good Night, David. Rest in peace.

I actually used to be addicted to Politics and in particular the Sunday Talking Head shows of which David Brinkleys Meet the Press or was it Washington Week in Review was a staple.

I would go to the early service at Church and then hurry home to get the newspaper and turn on the television and at the end of the day I would consider myself informed.

Then one day the topic of Public Prayer came up in one of the roundtable discussions and David Brinkley took on the instant role of denouncing prayer any kind of prayer and went on to revile Christianity. I sat there totally surprised and stunned as this well dressed elderly Washington insider politician actually foamed at the mouth with hatred of Christianity. It got so bad and Mr. Brinkley got so out of control that I thought an oxygen supply was going to have to be brought on to the set in order to calm down the exhausted gasping David Brinkley. Most of his colleagues looked on in surprised disbelief a couple tried to iterate that this was on television and not missing a beat several of the other colleagues chimed in with their insistence that the little tiny prayer to God is the cause of all evil in society and needed to be immediately abolished and not just prayer but even any thought about God was evil.

I thought well everyone is entitled to a bad day and I guess Mr. Brinkley just had his. But in the weeks to come he just couldnt get off of his hatred for Prayer, Christianity and mostly of Jesus. Suddenly after each week I felt less and less informed by the media and after a few weeks I did the unthinkable I stopped watching the news programs.

Even later I canceled my newspaper subscription and with more free time began to spend it at Church and it was at Church and not the TV that I began to become truly informed and for that I thank David Brinkley.

Im sad to hear that David passed away I hope that he did have a heart change of repentance because by now he does know that Public Prayer is not evil but it and all Prayer to Jesus is actually the opportunity of a Lifetime.

God Bless you,
David A. Brown

David,

Interesting how your thoughts run parallel to mine concerning David Brinkley; however, mine are for different reasons. As a child growing up in the 50s and 60s, David and Chet were always on my grandma's television. When I would visit her, that was her staple and I had no hope in being able to watch my programs when they were on... Resigned, I watched them and the rest of the commentators that would be on through the day.

As a youngster I thought David and Chet were the dry and most boring people in the world! As I aged and became an adult, I realized that I was right! They made the news serious alright, but they made the news boring. There were others who I liked better than these two. Dave Galloway, Walter Winchell, and others made the news more exciting and interesting.

Now as a much older adult I realize why David was so dry...he lacked the Spirit in his reports. I see now by your report of his condemnation of Christianity that he was suffering from lack of repentance. I too agree and hope that he repented and found our precious Lord and His blood to cover his sins. Amen David Brown ~Minister Falcon
